What does a negative price mean?
In Spain’s pool (the wholesale electricity market), energy providers buy electricity before supplying it to homes and businesses. When there’s an oversupply of renewable energy (especially solar or wind) and demand is low, prices can drop dramatically — even becoming negative. In those moments, the system essentially pays to absorb excess energy.
This doesn’t mean your bill will be zero or that you’ll get paid for using electricity, as other costs still apply (distribution, taxes, fees…). But it does show a major shift in how energy is produced and valued.
Why is this happening now?
According to OMIE (Spain’s electricity market operator), the number of zero or negative-price hours is similar to last year, but the average price in those hours has dropped further: from -€0.12/MWh in 2024 to -€1.80/MWh in 2025. The main reasons? More renewable generation, particularly solar and wind, slightly rising demand, and a lack of storage solutions for surplus energy.
